Hey everyone,
Today, I am here to talk about this show called Lucifer that is available on Netflix. I recently finished watching it and I realized that it is, at its core, a story of ascension.
If you are familiar with the Old Testament of the Bible, you will know that Lucifer is actually Samael, an angel who led a rebellion against God. This got him cast out of heaven and he became the first fallen angel, and he was forced to rule Hell for the rest of eternity.
However, in this show Lucifer gets bored of Hell and decides to take a vacation in Los Angeles. So, he currently lives there with his demon slave/guard Mazikeen or Maze, and runs a club called Lux. The show starts with Lucifer meeting Chloe Decker, a detective with the LAPD, when she comes to investigate a murder that happens outside Lux. The victim happens to be someone that Lucifer knows and cares about and he insists on helping with the investigation. This starts a partnership between Chloe and Lucifer and the latter becomes a consultant with the LAPD.
Through six seasons, we see Lucifer go from self-absorbed and immature to empathetic and caring. He starts therapy, addresses his issues, and heals, thereby rising again. In other words, he ascends. And as Lucifer himself says in the show, “if the Devil can rise, anyone can”.
This is the reason I found this show so interesting. It portrays Lucifer, the Devil, in a new light. We see that he is not in fact the bringer of evil; he just facilitates people following their true desires. The actual choice to do so remains with the person. Lucifer does not force anything; he is all about free will.
In fact, according to the show, ‘damned’ souls are damned to spend eternity in Hell by their own guilt and not by Lucifer. Lucifer is just the warden. So, if a soul manages to work through their guilt and forgive themselves, they can leave Hell and reach Heaven. Thus, they can ascend through self-love and self-acceptance.
Lucifer’s own transformation in the show is also based upon himself. His self-hatred and anger are what make him the Devil. Later, when he starts to accept himself, subconsciously at least, his angel wings- that he had cut off when he left Hell- grow back and his ‘Devil face’ disappears. On another note, when Lucifer subconsciously starts to have feelings for Chloe (because of course he’s in denial) he makes himself vulnerable (in other words mortal) in her presence.
What’s more, Lucifer is not the only angel to self-actualize. His brother Amenadiel, who is supposedly the first angel and another important character in the show, also does so. At first, Amenadiel loses his wings and his powers of slowing time because he, in an attempt to send Lucifer back to Hell, brings back to life a corrupt and evil cop who causes chaos until Lucifer and Chloe finally manage to kill him again.
This cop hurts a lot of innocent people in his attempt to send Lucifer back to Hell by killing him in Chloe’s presence. Amenadiel blames himself for all that, and loses his powers and his immortality. Initially, he thinks he is being punished by his father (God) but he later realizes that all of it was his own doing and eventually regains his powers.
Yet another example of the power of the Self in the show is Maze, Lucifer’s demon guard and later friend. Demons are not supposed to have souls as they are the designated torturers in Hell. Each damned soul in Hell tortures themselves with their guilt by reliving the worst moments of their lives over and over again in a loop, and the demons are the ones who play the parts of the other people in each Hell loop. This makes them experts at torture and killing and Maze was the best of them.
However, she falls in love with someone and she wishes for a soul because she doesn’t feel worthy of love without one. And she manages to grow one; she manages to grow a soul in spite of being a demon. She eventually gets married to her love and is happy.
Thus, this show seems to me a story of self-love and ascension. The lesson that I picked up from it is that no matter how terrible you think you are, there is always hope. All you have to do is learn to forgive, accept and love yourself. That will make all the difference!
That’s it for now… Until next time folks!!!
P.S: I’m in love with the background music for this series. Be sure to look up the Lucifer playlist on Spotify!
P.P.S: I also love the writing. So many of Lucifer’s dialogues are simply brilliant!
