The Mindset Question

Hey everyone,

So, I recently watched ‘Dil Bechara’, SSR’s last movie before he died and it triggered a thought; that there is no inherent meaning to life. Don’t ask me why this thought came up. I really have no idea. Maybe it was the theme of the movie or the fact that SSR died. I am not really sure.

Now, this is not an original thought. People having been saying this for centuries. In fact, there is a whole philosophy based around this thought called existentialism. But y’all probably knew that.

Anyway, the basic tenet of existentialism is that there is no inherent meaning to life and that individuals attribute meaning through their choices. I would add to this saying that you attribute meaning to life situations through your thoughts, emotions and feelings that guide your choices.

The above would mean that your reality is subjective, especially since most people live in their heads. Even if you are taking sensory information into account, we cannot really say that what we see is actually present as we see it. After all, our physical senses are extremely limited.

Additionally, even within our limited sensory capability, when we see, hear, touch, smell or taste something, the actual seeing, hearing, touching, smelling or tasting happens within our body as electrical signals from the brain.

And what controls the body? Of course, the mind.

Thus, even your sensory information is subjective. I mean how many times have you not seen something that was staring you right in the face? And how many times have you heard something you probably shouldn’t have and not heard something you should have?

Think about the implications of this. If your reality is a manifestation of your mind, you just have to change your mind to change your reality. However, simply changing your conscious mind is not enough; you must change your subconscious as well.

This is quite hard because there is so much about the subconscious we do not know. I should say that there is a lot about the subconscious we do not know experientially, because there are many theories about it that many psychologists have come up with over the years. But I will not go into that.

My point in writing this is to tell you that your mindset essentially defines your life and your mindset is always your choice. It takes a lot of work to shift your mindset, but the work is worth it.

Lastly, if you haven’t watched Dil Bechara yet, please do. SSR was brilliant as always. Sanjana Sanghi also did a commendable job as the cancer patient who wanted more from her life. Also, I loved the music!

That’s it for today folks… Until next time!
